Mechanical shock of an electrolytic capacitor (in-plane)

  • 12 / 08 / 2024

The mechanical shock in the out-of-plane direction of a PCB typically causes the largest deflections of the PCB and the largest loads applied to SMDs. However, a mechanical shock in the in-plane direction can trigger resonances of large SMDs, e.g., electrolytic capacitors, or through hole devices. With modal-based frequency response analyses, modal superposition and sub-modelling the solder-joint stress for such loads can be calculated efficiently.

The video shows the animation of a shock response (in-plane direction) of an electrolytic capacitor including solder-joint stresses for the same multi-PCBA model from our last post.
